Bombproof Casements
The casements, or bombproofs were originally designed to serve as soldiers´ barracks in the event of an enemy bombardment. During the Civil War, these rooms held
over 200 prisoners of war from the Confederate Army and lawbreakers from the Union side.
Some of these casements were used for storage of ammunition. The
largest casement has an oven and tables and benches and was presumably used dining.
During the Civil War the casement would have been fitted out with double decker bunk beds to house prisoners.
Officers Quarters
Officers and their families lived in this building, with the exception of the commandant. The conditions were not nearly as crowded as those found in the Soldiers´ Barracks.
We
are posting the first few photos now. More info about this case will
be posted shortly.

This
sketch shows the areas of the casement where activity
was noted. This is only an approximation as map is not to
scale. The presence was felt strongest by the door in casement
5
A strong presence
was felt in the room on the first floor to the right. |

The above photos were taken in Casement 4. The
center photo was taken by Investigator Nilsen when the
investigator in the photo felt a spirit standing behind her.

Casement 5 in supposedly one of the most
haunted areas of the fort. When we were there, At one point
Investigator Palagruto felt a strong presence enter the casement and
hang around in the doorway, as seen in the of the above photos.
The items you
see on the cots belong to the 78th Infantry
Division, U.S. WWII Living History re-enactment unit, "The
Lightning Division." They were staying at
the fort from Friday until Monday. They are a very nice bunch of
people and graciously allowed us into the areas where. They were set
up for the night.
