Bombproof Casements
The casements, or bombproofs were originally designed to serve as soldiers´ barracks in the event of an enemy bombardment. During the Civil War, these rooms held over 300 prisoners of war from the Confederate Army and lawbreakers from the Union side.

Some of these casements were used for storage of ammunition. The largest casement has an oven and tables and benches and was presumably used dining. During the Civil War the casement would have been fitted out with double decker bunk beds to house prisoners.

Officers Quarters
Officers and their families lived in this building, with the exception of the commandant. The conditions were not nearly as crowded as those found in the Soldiers´ Barracks.

We are posting the first few photos now. More info about this case will be posted shortly

Fireplace Reference Shots

The above photos were taken in Casemate 5. There are reference shots. We did light a fire in the fireplace because it was so cold outside this  night and we were going to sleep in here. These shots were taken to make sure the smoke was going up the chimney and not affecting any photos. Even though no smoke showed up in the photos, we did not point the camera in the direction of the fireplace during the investigation just to be safe.

This is where we decided to sleep for the night, although we did not sleep too much! Casement 5 in supposedly one of the most haunted areas of the fort. It housed hundreds of war prisoners as well as local criminals and political prisoners. We entered with the Fort Mifflin Staff at approximately 10:00pm. While we were collecting the wood, starting the fire and bringing in equipment, Investigator Palagruto heard a spirit loudly speaking in her ear.  A digital recorder was set up in the area. At approx. 10:58 PM The investigators heard movement in the casemate like furniture being moved. Investigator Nilsen took a photo and at the same time, Inv. Palagruto saw a light gray apparition of a man about 5'8" medium build with long sleeves and long pants and took photo 2. There were 4 EVPs recorded during this half hours and several positive photos taken. Reference shots are included on this web page. A short while later Audra detected some energy with the dowsing rods in the same spot the apparition manifested. Photos 3 and 4 were taken by Inv. Isanski who, along with the other investigators, felt a very strong presence in the hallway to the casements. This feeling was present in the hallway the entire night. Photo 5 was taken at random by Inv. Isanski in the post active area of casemate 5. Reference short of the fireplace area are above. Photos 6, 7 and 8 were taken in Casemate 5 from the door area looking inside.

"Get the keys, I'm getting too old for this"   As you can see on the graph, the frequency of this voice dips down below 300 Hz for portions of this EVP. The human voice can not make a sound with a frequency below 300 Hz. Click the graph to enlarge it.

Same EVP as above a little slower.

"Get Keys"    CLICK TO LISTEN

These EVP's about keys make sense because in casemate 5 where they were recorded hundreds of people were held prisoner. Many of them died from dysentery. The apparition seen about the time of the recordings was in gray shirt and trousers. These EVP's could be the pleas for release of a Confederate prisoner who thinks he is still locked in.

Painful moan   CLICK TO LISTEN

In this EVP you hear a moan. All the investigators were out on the casement in the hallway at the time. Shortly after the moan there is what sounds like another word but we could not make out what it says.
"I'm here"    CLICK TO LISTEN

I'm Here is immediately after the bang.

This photo was taken when an investigator went to check out some noises. We heard some movement in this artillery shed. It could possibly have been an animal. The Fort Mifflin staff told us about the spirit of a  young girl  in this area who is named Emily. She cries and calls for her mother, At least one employee of the fort had quit after encountering this spirit.
