Why this program is
important:
| Reason
#1 Approximately 45% of
children in Philadelphia's public schools are not reading at grade
level by fourth grade.
|

|
|

|
Reason
#2 The majority of
children do not attend quality pre-school programs. Lack of early
childhood education is related to poor school achievement.
|
| Reason
#3 Nearly 80% live with
families whose incomes are so low that they are eligible of free
or reduced-price lunch. Recent research shows that many such homes
contain an average of less than one book.
|

|
|

|
Reason
#4 Children from middle
income homes enter school having had 1000-1700 hours of one-to-one
experiences with books: children from low income families only 25
hours.
|
|
Reason
#5 If students can't
read well by the end of third grade, chances for later school
success are greatly diminished, including a greater likelihood of
delinquent behavior and dropping out of school. 85% of the children
who appear in juvenile court lack reading skills.
|

|
|

|
Reason
#6 Low-achieving readers
who participate in programs that involve only an hour of reading
daily gain more than 2 1/2 years in reading in one school year.

Through
the generosity of others, in providing donations and holding book
drives, PHILADELPHIA READS serves as a children's book distribution.
At any given time, teachers, librarians and educational staff from
schools, after-school and summer programs are encouraged and welcome
to come to the PHILADELPHIA READS' offices and select books for their
school library, classroom library and reading corner. Our books are
new and gently used, appropriate for elementary school students in
Kindergarten through 3rd grade and contain a wide selection of titles
and genres. Occasionally, we also have books appropriate for middle
school students as well.
PHILADELPHIA
READS works with
individuals, schools, community and faith-based organizations and
businesses to provide mentors, resources and advocacy for in-school,
after school and summer programs. Together these partners and
PHILADELPHIA READS help to strengthen the literacy skills of
Philadelphia's youngest and neediest school children.
PHILADELPHIA
READS is a collaborative effort with the School District and Free
Library of Philadelphia. It is an initiative of the Office of
the Mayor and an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the Greater
Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.
