Why Investigators go to Gettysburg
by

John A. Nilsen

To help you fully appreciate the spirits you might encounter in Gettysburg I strongly suggest you familiarize yourself with the Battle and the Civil War. The sprits that reside there are there for a reason. To go to Gettysburg ignorant of that reason is a disservice to them and to you.

Gettysburg was the turning point in the war which was going rather badly for the Union Army of the Potomac. It could be argued that the South's troubles began with the battle before Gettysburg, which was the Battle of Chancellorsville, where Confederate General Stonewall Jackson was accidentally shot and killed by his own troops. The Battle of Gettysburg was actually a three day battle culminating in the famous, although misnamed "Pickett's Charge". To keep it really simple, the first day's battle, where the Confederates first clashed with the Army of the Potomac under Gen. George Meade, took place west of the town on McPherson's Ridge. The Union held most of the day but was soon outflanked by Gen. Ewell's Second Corps who came down from the north of town. The Union army retreated through Gettsyburg winding up on a prominent ridge south of town called Cemetery Ridge.

The second day's battle consisted of the Confederates, under Gen. Robert E. Lee, attacking the right and left flanks the Union line. (The Union right flank was Culp's Hill and their left flank was a rocky hill called Little Round Top). The South was unsuccessful at both flanks and the day ended with heavy casualties on both sides.

On the third day Robert E. Lee decided to attack the Union center, deciding it had to be their weakest point. He was wrong...the Union anticipated this move and reinforced their center. Lee ordered the First Corps under Gen. Pete Longstreet to make the attack across about a mile of open rolling fields. This attack was named after Gen. George Pickett who had a division under Gen. Longstreet. Almost from the start Union artillery created huge holes in the Confederate lines as they moved closer to the wall on Cemetery Hill where the Union army laid in wait. As they crossed the Emmitsburg Road the Confederates came under fire from the Union infantry hiding behind the stone wall. Confederate losses were appalling and the few men reached the wall were either killed, taken prisoner, or were forced to fall back...walking backwards to avoid getting shot in the back. They were fearful that being shot in the back would be taken by their loved ones that they were running away.

The above is a ridiculously shortened synopsis of a battle that has filled volumes since the smoke cleared the battlefield. I neglected to give you the dates of the battle: July 1st, 2nd and 3rd 1863. If you get a chance read up on what happened there. Look at pictures; maybe even see the movie (which I played a small part in). If you already know about the battle then that's great...I'm no expert on it by any means. Anne is also well versed on it through all the reading she's done on it. I'll be glad to give you a small tour of the battlefield, if you'd like, when we arrive. Remember one thing else, even though the National Park Service has possession of the fields and hills around Gettysburg, the town itself is also part of what happened there.

Non-Human Spirits
By
Anne Palagruto

Ghosts, hauntings, séances, tarot cards, Ouija boards, crystal balls--what do they have in common?  They are fascinating to most people because they seem to open the window into a curious and unknown world that lies beyond. And to many, such things seem no more dangerous than opening a window in their homes. Opening a window can be great. It can let in sunshine and the spring breeze. However sometimes a big bug can get in and you end up with a bunch of mosquito bites that bother you for a long time. In rare instances your house can become infested with insects. Some insects even carry diseases! You see what I am getting at? It is the same way when people “leave the window open” to call spirits. You never know what’s gonna get in! Although rare, encounters with non-human spirits seem to be on the rise.
The malevolent inhuman Spirit is a being of great energy, which is only matched by its often-terrifying intelligence. These entities are low-level spirits that interact with the material world. The Malevolent Inhuman Spirit is capable of manipulating Earth-based matter and energy.  This allows the MIS to create any disturbance it is able to imagine.... and they often have great imaginations.  They can turn wood to rock, water to blood, rain to pebbles, or flesh to gelatin.  There is literally no limit to what they can do. Malevolent Inhuman Spirits cannot haunt a person without that person's invitation to stay.  Invitation is made when a person uses scrying devices, such as, Ouija, Kabala, Tarot, I Ching, etc.  Also, an invitation to stay is made when someone tries to communicate with the Spirit Realm via a Psychic, Medium, or Séance. There are very few ways to get rid of a non-human spirit.  Once it has received an invitation to stay, it is difficult, indeed,  to cause it to leave without a fight. Rituals by spell, incantations, device, or charms will not work,  but may only cause it to retreat until the target victim feels safe and secure,  putting down all their guards as they finally feel safe again. Many Ghost Hunters and Psychic believe that to rid one of a Malevolent Spirit, it comes down to a force of wills.  This is not true.  If a malevolent non-human Spirit feels like staying, it will stay.  They are immortal with a seemingly unlimited power to control the universe, and there is nothing a person who is not well trained ion dealing with them can do to force them to leave. If you come in contact with something you believe could be a Malevolent Inhuman Spirit, the best thing to do is to attempt to ignore it.  Believe it or not, this is the best action to take.  And whether you believe it is truly there or not.....  it is best to be safe.. and make sure to say quietly ....  "You are NOT invited to stay."
Your chance of coming across a case like this is very slim, however there are some things you should keep in mind when interviewing witnesses.  Most of these things are not significant when alone, but put a few of them together and you have a serious reason for concern. If you review your questionnaire and find any of these events listed in the answers it is important to speak with the client and get more info. Don't be afraid to get too personal, sometimes there are things in a family that may leave them open to attack by non-human spirits. Things such as alcoholism, drug abuse or domestic violence could play a part, as well as suicide attempts. These can either be a result of the entity’s presence or could cause the home to be more susceptible to them. Overly religious households are at risk also. If you are called to a house where there are prayer meetings held every night and there are crucifixes in every room you should question the residents more about their religious practices. If more than two or  three of these things are present you should suspect a non-human entity:

  •     Odors such as sulfur, burning motors, death or decay, urine, feces or sewage
  •     Negative mood swings or depression
  •     Extreme personality changes
  •     Suicide attempts
  •     Major unexplained plumbing problems i.e. toilet backing up or sewage in basement
  •     Events happening in multiples of three i.e. knocks occurring three at a time
  •     Events occurring routinely at 3:00AM or 3:00PM
  •     Events occurring in a pattern…every three days, three months or three weeks
  •     Terrifying apparitions
  •     Apparitions of humans that are imperfect i.e. glowing eyes or missing eyes a body part (most commonly a little boy)
  •     Terrifying nightmares
  •     Extremely religions (especially Christian) households (this is known as religious provocation)
  •     People in household questioning their faith in God
  •     Apparitions of imperfect animals
  •     Unexplained fires
  •     Involvement in the occult or religions who call on spirits i.e. Santeria
  •     Use of a Ouija Boards or Séances
  •     Activity getting worse after clergy consulted
Non-human spirits often disguise themselves and friendly and helpful human spirits. If you are planning an investigation and you have reason to suspect it may be a non-human spirit the best thing to do is get help from someone who is experienced in this type of haunting.

"There's a monster in my closet!"

by

Audra Isanski

"There's a monster in my closet!" How many times have parents heard that over the years? Definately too many times to count. But what do you tell the child to make them feel better; especially if you live in a haunted home?

First, we must realize a few things. Children are more sensitive to spirits and spiritual activity. This doesn't mean that the child is in any grave danger; just that they are more receptive and likely to notice such things. A child's mind is more open and less cluttered. They also haven't been programmed to disbelieve in these things, as are so many adults. This can be a blessing, when you look at it.

A child's mind is an empty slate. They are open-minded from the start, because they have so much to learn. If they were like adults, they'd hardly ever learn anything! It's sad to say, but the cliche of "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" somtimes does apply. With children, there is no such problem.

Children may sometimes see or hear spirits and not even know it. It doesn't come up until they are frightened by it. A perfect example of this is the child with an "imaginary" or "pretend" friend. Of course, some of these friends are imaginary. But some are not. A classic example for me is the story of myself as a little girl.

I did have a "pretend friend" when I was little. Her name was Watra. How I came up with that name, I'll never know. When I told stories of her, they were obviously made up -- things that could never happen, even to an adult. But then there was my other friend.

That one didn't have a name...and, as a matter of fact, my mother only knows of me mentioning this one once. And I only remember something like this happening to me one time. I was in my playroom alone, and my mom heard my doll crib moving around on it's rollers. It was rolling all over the place, which was unusual. When she called to me to ask what I was doing, I told her that my friend was giving me a ride. What I remember is sitting in this doll crib (it was big enough for me to do so) and being pushed around the room. But there was no one physically there. It didn't frighten me...I guess I thought it was "normal". Unfortunately, my mother never came in to check what I meant. Come to think of it, I'm glad she didn't...she probably would have fainted!

But then there are the ones that frighten children. This might be because they've learned enough to know that something "isn't normal". Or because it's at a time of day or in a context that just doesn't seem right for something to be happening. I mean, who really expects for there to be a person in their closet? If it was a live person in there, an adult would have the same reaction as a child -- fright. So if a child sees a person in their closet, whether that person is alive or on the spirit realm, it will scare them. And, in all honesty, the child might actually be imagining it, or it could have been a nightmare that prompted their reaction.

But what do we DO about it? For one thing, you don't want to close the child's mind. Reassure them and comfort them, yes; but don't tell them it's not real or that they are just seeing things. Remember, if the child is sensitive and does in fact see something (or someone), they will not only get upset at you for not believing them, but will actually begin to think that there is something wrong with them.

Begin by talking to the child. Ask them what they saw or heard that scared them. Have them give as much detail as possible. Look, with the child, for the "logical" reason behind their experience. Was the closet door open and the night-light showing a light colored piece of clothing? Was the cat under the bed scrambling around making the noises? Was it just a branch of a tree tapping at the window? If so, show the child what it actually was, and explain how it happened.

If you can't find a logical explaination, then it's time to work with some other methods. Don't just tell the child that it must have been one of the logical things that you were looking for with them. The child knows you didn't find anything; treat them with respect for that knowledge.

You have a few choices for what you can try next; use the one that you think will comfort the child most. I suggest beginning with giving the child some examples of when you were younger

Paranormal Investigation vs Ghost Hunt
by
Anne Palagruto

Most people think a ghost hunt is the same thing as a paranormal investigation To those of us in the field who consider ourselves professional investigators and are serious about what we do, they are two very different things. A ghost hunt, which is much less formal than a paranormal investigation, seems to be what most paranormal enthusiasts are looking for. People go on ghost hunts mostly for fun and excitement. They look for ghosts in places rumored to be haunted. They may go to a famous haunted place they read about in a book, or a scary looking abandoned building. They go into cemeteries at night looking hoping to see a lady in white floating above her grave and trying to get that perfect photo of her. They may want to check out the dilapidated old house in their neighborhood that for years the kids have been daring each other to enter. Every neighborhood has a house like that. When I was a kid it was Gina Bean’s house. Rumor has it she killed her husband and to this day his body is hanging in the living room. I must admit, 35 years later I still get the urge to peak in the window when I pass by it.

If this is the type of thing you enjoy then the position of ghost hunter is for you. You will do some of the same things done on investigations and will use the same tools but you will not have to worry so much about documentation. Documentation is very important to a professional investigator.  A paranormal investigation requires a carefully planned, scientifically researched and documented examination.  All notes taken by each investigator present are compared and combined to paint a complete picture of what, if any, paranormal activity going on at the site. This is then presented to the client along with any positive photos, video or audiotapes.

The paranormal investigator is not someone who goes out into wilderness areas or abandoned buildings in search of ghosts. Paranormal investigators are usually called into a place of a known haunting. The request for assistance usually comes from the residents or owners of the haunted property. (You won’t find a paranormal investigator snooping around Gina Bean’s house.) Sometimes the residents are afraid because they don’t understand what is happening, sometimes they want the spirit to leave, and sometimes they just want someone to tell them they are not imagining things. Most of the clients I have dealt with over the years just want to know if there really are spirits present in their home and how to live with them in harmony. Some feel sorry for he spirits and want to help them cross over. I have had clients jump for joy when we told them that they were in fact living with a ghost. “I KNEW I was right!” is something I hear all the time from clients who are happy we have confirmed what they believed all along. It is rare to have a client ask for removal of the spirits. Most of the time, clients who call us because they are afraid of what is happening feel much better after we speak with them and explain the true nature of spirits and what a ghost can and cannot do. They are happy to hear that a ghost can’t kill them and it can’t suck their kids into the television set.  Occasionally we do run into a nasty spirit who is causing problems for the people who have to live with it. Sometimes this situation arises after someone has used a ouija board in the home. There are several ways to deal with this problem, and our job if to explain to the client what their options are and help them find a resolution that they will be comfortable with.

In addition to the people who go ghost hunting for a thrill, there are the people use ghost hunts get their feet wet in the field and to practice using ghost hunting tools before moving on to train with professionals and possible join an organized group. These ghost hunters are usually are well read on the subject of ghosts and have a desire to someday become serious investigators either to scientifically prove the existence of ghosts or to help people who live with spirits to understand ghosts and hauntings better.

My first outing with paranormal investigators was a night to remember. I had been looking for ghosts on my own for years, mainly historic buildings and places I read about. I guess I was a ghost hunter back then. I started my own website and met someone on the Internet who ran a group not far from where I live. He invited me to a meeting and at that meeting they planned an investigation at a cemetery and said I was welcome to join them.  Needless to say I was not crazy about going to a cemetery in the middle of the night with a bunch of people I had only met once time for an hour or so.  I didn’t want to go alone with this group of strangers and I could not talk any of my friends into doing such a ridiculous thing. I had no problem, however, into talking my Mom into going. I guess she is the one who gave me the adventurer gene.

I remember turning into the darker-than-dark graveyard trying to decide who to leave my collection of ghost books to and wondering how long it would take the police to find my body after I was killed either by this ghost hunting cult we were following in the car ahead of us or some deranged headless ghost swooping down and smothering me. Once we were parked and I got out of the car it was too late to turn back. As my eyes got adjusted to the dark, it didn’t look so bad after all. The stars were out, and it was so quiet and peaceful. I started to relax. It wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it would be. In fact, it was awesome. I carried a notebook with me and tried to keep a log of all my photos and whatever I was experiencing ad directed by the leader of my group. I remember writing that I smelled Chinese food by one of the graves. It was really strong. When I mentioned it to the others they all agreed they smelled the same thing. It was then that my Mom showed us the garlic she was wearing around her neck. I told her to take it off, since garlic was for protection against vampires, not ghosts. She put it back in her bag along with the wooden stake. Anyway, by the end of the night I actually began to see things, whitish blue things rising up from the ground, far ahead of me. When one of the investigators said  “Did you see that?” I knew I wasn’t imagining it. I was hooked... and the rest is history.

The Art of Smudging
by
Anne Palagruto

Smudging Herbs

Soon after human beings discovered how to make fire we began to notice that when different things burned they produced aromatic smoke.   As herbs, roots, resins, and barks are changed from their physical form (of this world) they are changed by the element of fire into smoke (spirit world form).  This transformation is evidence of the spirit within substances.

Throughout human history, aromatic plants have been used in the daily activities of people from every culture. As time has passed this connection between people and plants is being forgotten. We are drifting further and further away from the ways that connect us to the plant and animal spirits we share the earth with. We are losing our understanding of the physical things around us connect us to the spirit of life. In Catholicism the use of incense is likened to one’s prayer being kindled by fire in the heart, spoken by the lips resulting in the odor of Christ on the breath. People native to Turtle Island (The Americas) understand that the influence of plant medicine is very real in their daily lives.

Sage The use of sage is for healing, the smoke is used to bless, cleanse and heal the person or object being smudged. Sage is used to “wash off” the outside world when one enters ceremony or other sacred space. Objects are likewise washed off with sage medicine smoke to rid them of unwanted influences. True sages are in the genus of Salvia; this includes Salvia Officinalis (garden sage) and Salvia Apiana (White Sage).  Many of the herbs called sage come from a completely different family of plants, the Asteracea family. This family brings us the genus of Artemisia from which come New Mexico Sage (Artemisia tridentada), and the sage from the Dakotas (Artemisia ludoviciana). All of these sages (Salvia and Artemisia) are used for healing and cleansing.

Cedar Cedar is a medicine of protection. Cedar trees are very old, wise and powerful spirits. Cedar is often used to cleanse a home or apartment when first moving in. Inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person, place or object from unwanted influences. Cedar is used as a name for a number of different genuses of trees and shrubs. The primary ones are Cedrus, Thuja, Libdocedrus and Juniperus.  The Junipers are not truly Cedars (scientifically) but are used as such by many people. Keep in mind that these scientific names have little meaning to the people using them as medicine in traditional ways.

Sweetgrass Also called Seneca grass, holy grass and vanilla grass. This very special herb’s sweet vanilla-like scent is the breath of the Earth mother, bringing the blessing of Mother Earth’s love.  Sweetgrass is burned to remind us of essence of the feminine and that the earth provides us with everything we need.  Most commonly found as braids, Sweetgrass can be unbraided and lit, blown out and the smoke that follows washed over the subject of the blessing. This wonderful medicine can be cut with a scissors into small pieces and sprinkles on hot Charcoal Tablets.

Lavender  This native of Europe is often used for invitation of the spirits. The name may be derived from the Latin lavare (to wash) or livendula (meaning bluish). In Ancient times lavender was an important herb used in mummification.  There is a legend that the clothing of baby Jesus was laid upon a lavender bush and acquired the fragrance. Some Christians still regard the scent of lavender as a safeguard against evil.  Burning Lavender is best done on Charcoal Tablets

Copal  This is tree sap from Mexico that is similar to Frankincense. When burned it has a crisp, clean, sharp scent that is almost citrus-like.  Copal is sacred to the native peoples of Mexico, as it is a gift “pleasing to the gods”.  Because copal is the blood of trees it is offered to honor the enormous gift given to us by all of the tree people of our planet.  Burning Copal is best done on Charcoal Tablets

Frankincense At one time both Frankincense and myrrh were considered to be more valuable than gold. Used to embalm the bodies of the Egyptian Pharaohs, this tree resin is considered to cleanse and protect the soul.  Frankincense became important to most every major religion in the world and is still used in Muslim, Jewish and Catholic rituals. Frankincense is said to ease depression and promote clairvoyance. Burning Frankincense is best done on Charcoal Tablets.

Myrrh This tree resin is said to help one maintain a state of enlightenment. Also it connects one to the spirit of youth and clears the path of debris that stands in the way of one’s truth. Burning Myrrh is best done on Charcoal Tablets.

Smudging Feather It is traditional to use a bird’s feather to brush the smoke over the person or object being blessed. It is important to use the underside of the feather to wash the smoke over the object of blessing. It is the underside of the bird and it’s wings that face the Mother Earth as it flies and it is this surface of the feather that offers the blessing medicine of the bird.

Making Smudge Sticks (wands).

Smudge sticks are simply bunches of herbs that have been gathered and dried. Gather the fresh herbs of your choice keeping the branches or bunches to about 7 inches. You will need scissors, cotton embroidery floss or crochet cotton and a piece of fabric or soft leather to roll the smudge stick. Select a number of branches or bunches to obtain your desired thickness.   It helps to squeeze them together to judge just how thick the bundle will be. Cut a piece of cotton thread about 3x the length of the bundle. (Embroidery floss or crochet thread works quite well, do Not use polyester thread)  Hold the bunch of branches together by the branch end and wrap the thread around the bottom 4 or 5 times. Continue wrapping towards the end of the bunch using wider wraps. When you get near the end of the bunch start wrapping back towards the stem end crossing over the previous wrapped thread creating a crisscross pattern. When you get back to the bottom make 2 or 3 wraps and tie the ends together and cut off the excess. Trim the bottom of the bunch below the tie.  You may also at the time trim any stray pieces sticking out.  Place the smudge stick on a piece of fabric or soft leather and fold it over the smudge stick. Firmly roll the stick between the layers a few times. Hang out to dry.  It is recommended that the branch bundle not be to large as it will take longer for the inside to dry and you don't want mold to set in.

How to do a Sage Smudge Ceremony

Regarding the smudge ceremony, remember that no matter the details of your actions, God  knows what you are trying to do, and in the end you can't do it wrong, there is no wrong, God and the master spirit guides in the world unseen will understand your actions and bless your efforts. Well first of all I use sage or sage with sweetgrass.

Then I say a prayer asking God and my spirit guides to be with me and guide my actions.
The smudge stick is sometimes hard to keep smoldering so when you first light it, blow out the flame after it gets going and then blow into the smoldering embers to really let it take hold or else it might burn out. If it does burn out, just re-light it again and keep going. After I get the stick smoldering, I ask the smoke be blessed and that it will trap any and all negative entities and energies. The first thing I smudge is myself starting with the bottoms of my feet and then working the smoke up around my body and around my head and crown chakra. After that is done I start at a doorway and direct the smoke completely around the door frame, you will repeat this in every room starting at the entry doorway to each room and the front and back or side doors to the apartment or house.

After the doorways just go around the room to the four corners and then down the middle with a circular motion. Don't forget to open closet doors and drawers to chests and cabinets also before you begin. The mental image is as if you were about to fumigate the property for bugs, the idea is to let the smudge smoke get into and around everything within the home or office. Instead of getting rid of bugs, you are getting rid of negative entities and energies. When you have completed every room, then say another prayer,
thanking God and your spirit guides for help and blessings asking that all the smoke carry away all negative entities and energies out away from your home or office. Open as many windows and doors as is practical to allow the smoke to be purged from the interior and fresh air and chi to flow back into your living or work space. The idea is the smoke traps the unwanted stuff and then you let it out through the windows and open doors.

I always burn some good smelling incense at the beginning of the ceremony to help cover the pot-like smelling sage. If possible I also light a few candles and create a makeshift altar with the candles and a few crystals of what ever you might have before I begin, to help act as center place for my prayers and smudge lighting. To help direct the smoke into drawers and closets, you can either use a feather if you have one or just use your hand in a fanning motion. One other practical matter, sometimes smoldering pieces of ash from the sage or string the binds the sage will tend to drop to the floor so to prevent burn spots on your floor, it might be best to try and use a shell or even a paper plate or something to catch the ash during the smudging.

Another alternative to a smudge "stick" bundle would be to burn loose sage in a dish or bowl which would prevent the smoldering ash problem. This ceremony does tend to drain the person doing it, so allow so rest time for afterward. You may notice the difference of energy right away or especially the next day, as will visitors to your home or work space.

One last item, should you have any crystals or rocks in your space, you may want to raise their vibration after the smudging by ringing a bell, or ringing a brass bowl near where they sit. Finally put out the smudge and after closing the windows and doors sit down and relax for a while and begin to enjoy your cleansed environment. You might want to redo the smudge ceremony at least every 6 months , or more often if you feel the need. You might want to try and time the smudging to a "new moon" or at the change of seasons.

Remember God and your spirit guides understand what you are trying to do, so THERE IS NO WRONG WAY to do it. You may want to include some of your favorite readings, or do this with a loved one. Basically that's it, good luck and be well.

Past Life Regression And Dream Association
by
Jonathan Williams

Reincarnation is the belief that when you die, you or an essential part of you, soul, spirit, essence, whatever you call it, will return to earth, take up another body and start life all over again. This belief is widely skeptical, and researched by millions. In the process of reincarnation an individual may possibly have dreams or visions in the form of Past Life Regression. These visions or dreams could pinpoint what that individual was or did during his/her past life. This phenomenon also could lead to new historical breakthroughs, evidence proving reincarnation, or just the benefit of the doubt.

Through the ages, ways of past life regression came in really only two forms, vision and dreams. Now in the age of the psyche a third form has spawned. This form is known as hypnosis, or the commanding of the mind. If a person is hypnotized he/she can be asked to go back through time and look onto past lives and historic events during their lives. Now this technique is growing ever so popular in finding out peoples past lives and events.

One of the biggest arguments against the theory of reincarnation is the fact that we do not remember our past lives. There is a very good reason for this. Imagine having to cope with this life and all that it brings, if you had clear memories of everything you had seen or done, and everyone you had ever met before in your past lives.

One of the winning arguments for reincarnation are the child prodigies. It is argued that the only way these children could possibly know and do what they do is because they remember it from another life. A three-year old boy walked into the Museum of Natural History in New York City and began explaining about the dinosaurs on display. He showed intelligence and, upon careful questioning, had information that not even the aged scientists knew.

Although we think we cannot remember our past lives, we really do to a certain extent, if only in very short flashes or deja vu. (All this has happened to me before!) Experience is very common, and very few people will admit that they have not felt like that at one time or another. There is always that person that you feel you have met before, as well as that street you walked down or that foreign language you find yourself speaking, on occasion.

In closing, past life regression comes in many forms. Whether it be a dream, hypnosis, or just a fateful experience, reincarnation is out there in spirit and soul. Whether you believe it is totally up to you, that's what makes us human, the open mind. (This article has been condensed. Full article is at http://www.soultrackers.com/experiences/pastlife.html)
